Absolute Wealth, Relative Deprivation and Relative Satisfaction as Determinants of Depressive Symptoms: Evidence From Mexico

چکیده
Adopting Fehr and Schmidt’s (1999) framework of ‘self-centred inequality’, we study absolute achievement, relative deprivation and relative satisfaction as predictors of depressive symptoms. Our empirical analysis is based on the 2012 Mexican Demographic and Health Survey, which is nationally representative and covers 43,912 individuals. We find that each of those variables is a significant predictor for the intensity of depressive symptoms, with a positive coefficient for relative deprivation and negative coefficients for absolute wealth and relative satisfaction. In addition, we show that the inclusion of interaction terms enables a better understanding of the role of demographic variables such as gender and age, which have received particular attention in the medical literature.

Relative Deprivation and Mental Health in Canadian Adolescents
Prior research on social class differences in adult mental illness suggests that relative differences in affluence impact mental health and well-being more than absolute affluence. However, it is unclear whether relative deprivation also relates to adolescent mental health and to both internalizing and externalizing dimensions of mental health. This study examined the association between relati...
متن کاملWhy does Income Relate to Depressive Symptoms? Testing the Income Rank Hypothesis Longitudinally
This paper reports a test of the relative income rank hypothesis of depression, according to which it is the rank position of an individual's income amongst a comparison group, rather than the individual's absolute income, that will be associated with depressive symptoms. A new methodology is developed to test between psychosocial and material explanations of why income relates to well-being. T...

OBJECTIVE Depression is the second most common mental disorder in older adults (OA) worldwide. The objective of our study was to estimate the association of income ...

Subjective Well-Being and Relative Deprivation: An Empirical Link This paper explores the relationship between two well-established concepts of measuring individual well-being: the concept of happiness, i.e. self-reported level of satisfaction with income and life, and relative deprivation/satisfaction, i.e. the gaps between the individual's income and the incomes of all individuals richer/poor...
